Chart Your Progress

It's important to chart your exercise progress for a few reasons:

  • A visual representation of your progress can be a great motivator.
  • Charts may reveal portions of your exercise routine that need more work.
  • You may find yourself working out more just so you can fill out your chart.

An exercise chart can also be a tool used in tandem with a personal trainer. Since you may not be able to meet with your personal trainer for every workout, a meticulously recorded exercise chart can assist the personal trainer in figuring out what you have been doing and what still needs to be done.

Find Exercise Charts for Free

If you have a subscription to a fitness magazine, chances are every few issues include exercise charts for free. These charts are excellent tools for people who aren't quite sure where to start or what to record. Usually the charts included within fitness magazines are easily followed and comprehensive with regards to the exercises tracked on the chart.

The Internet is a valuable tool when searching for exercise charts for free as well. You can find different versions of charts online and in some instances you can download and customize the charts. This enables you to follow your progress beyond penciling in reps and weights, especially if the free chart comes with a free program that allows you to input your progress into your computer.

Here is a brief list of some of the exercise charts offered online free of charge:

  • Exercise Goals offers a downloadable chart in PDF form which is specific to weight training.
  • Body Building offers several different free charts for download that are designed for bodybuilders. Some of the charts available include gender specific and charts for beginners.
  • Fitness Attitudes offers exercise charts for free that are designed to track progress with cardio programs.
  • Weight Loss for All offers a free exercise chart that reveals the number of calories burned in relation to the exercise regime charted.
  • LA Diet Plan offers a downloadable chart that also includes suggestions for daily exercises.

This is a fraction of the websites which offer exercise charts completely free of charge. The trick is finding the chart that records everything you want to record, whether it's a chart that you hang on your wall, carry in a binder, or download to your computer.

Caution

While downloading free charts from the Internet is relatively easy, you should always keep in mind that there is the potential for your computer to become infected with a virus or spyware if you access websites that are designed to implant these items on your computer.

Try to deal with websites which you are already familiar with, or with websites that have superb reputations. Do not download items from a website which seems shady or that asks for a credit card number even though the chart is supposed to be free.

Additional Resources

Free exercise charts are sometimes included with the purchase of fitness or dietary items. For example, many weight loss supplements include charts to encourage users to exercise and many exercise items have charts included in the product packaging that are specific to the item.

If you are a member of a gym or fitness center, you may be able to get free charts from the staff. You may also be able to visit your local library and make copies of exercise charts from within the books there, but check first with the staff to make sure you are allowed to copy these materials.
