Exercises for Lifting the Breasts

Fitness professionals are often asked about exercises for lifting the breasts. Unfortunately, for most women, sagging breasts are an inevitable fact of life. That said, there are ways to change the appearance of the breasts, and make them look firmer. It's all done with muscles.
The Fallacy of Exercises for Lifting the Breasts
It's important to realize that your breasts are made up of fat, not muscle. Therefore, the more body fat you have, the larger your breast might be. This is why the Barbie Doll image is unrealistic. Keep this in mind when you set up a fitness plan. Women rarely have slim hips and thighs while having huge but firm breasts. Since there is no muscle in the breast tissue itself, there are no specific breast-firming exercises.
What Causes Sagging of the Breasts?
While the breasts are made up of fat, they do have ligaments, muscles and connective tissue that support them. As we age, the forces of gravity begin to pull the breasts down. When this happens, the ligaments that support the breasts begin to stretch, which in turn causes sagging. How much the breasts sag depends upon the elasticity of your skin, which is determined by diet, genetics and the normal aging process.
Rapid weight loss can also cause the breasts to sag. Losing weight causes a decrease in fat. Unfortunately, the ligaments around your breasts do not retract accordingly. As a result, the breasts begin to sag.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding can also account for sagging breasts. The process is known as breast involution, and it usually occurs after weaning or after pregnancy. If you don't breastfeed, you are still not immune. It will catch up to you during menopause. Breast involution occurs when the milk producing system inside the breast is no longer needed. As such, it begins to shrink. Unfortunately, while the tissue is shrinking, the surrounding skin remains the same. The result: sagging breasts.
No matter how many exercises for lifting the breasts you perform, the breast sagging process is inevitable. However, these exercises can improve aesthetics, enhance your postural alignment and promote greater self-confidence.
Exercises for Enhancing Breast Appearance
There are two ways to enhance the appearance of the breasts through exercise:
- Performing chest exercises
- Performing back exercises
Chest Exercises
Popular chest exercises include:
- Dumbbell bench press: The dumbbell bench press works the pectoralis major. You can also perform a dumbbell barbell bench press
- Decline chest press: The decline chest press works the lower portion of the chest, as well as the deltoids
- Chest fly: Simply put, the chest fly is the best exercise for developing muscular definition in your cleavage. It can be performed with dumbbells or on a peck deck machine
- Incline chest press: The incline chest press targets the upper pectoral muscles. It can also be performed with weights or barbells
- Weighted push-up: The weighted push-up is an advanced chest exercise, which can be performed with a partner
Back Exercises
Many people become so obsessed with performing chest exercises, that they neglect to balance the muscles with back exercises. Ironically, this might contribute to the sagging breast problem. Working your chest without working your back contributes to a slouching posture, which in turn hastens the forces of gravity. To avoid this problem, the following back exercises should be performed.
Additionally, improving your posture can work wonders for giving the appearance of firm and lifted breasts. If you stand tall, you just might be able to defy the forces of gravity, or at least delay them. Consider taking part in Pilates or some other form postural alignment workout.
