Female Abs

From LoveToKnow Exercise

While female abs can become just as defined as male abs, many women are looking for a less sculpted look than the popular six-pack that are so popular on men. Whether you are looking for a perfectly defined stomach, or you'd just like your belly to be attractively flat and curvy, there are two things to remember: targeting stomach muscles and getting rid of fat.

Fabulous Female Abs

Many people forget that it's also necessary to make sure that there is very little fat in the abdominal region before one can expect to get defined abs. Doing lots of exercises to target abdominal muscles will only result in visible results if those new muscles are not covered in a layer of fat.

Exercises for Female Abs

Exercises that target the abdominal muscles are a necessary component of getting those defined female abs you're looking for. While some women prefer to simply do abdominal exercises, other women prefer to work around the entire 'core' area of the body. Abdominal strength is important; however, lower back strength is just as important when it comes to an overall healthy body. Core strength is often heard in association with Pilates, but you don't have to practice Pilates in order to improve strength in your entire core, including your abs.

Core Strength

Doing Pilates is one way to increase your core strength. Many people enjoy Pilates or Yoga courses because they give the chance to exercise with the professional support of a teacher. On the other hand, there are lots of core exercises that can be practiced without the help of a personal trainer, and the best news of all is that most of these can be done at home!

Two good exercises for overall core strength are the 'plank' and the 'side plank'---both of which are common in Yoga.

  • Plank: Bend forward at the waist until your hands touch the ground (bend your knees if you have to) and step one foot back and then the other. What the plank should look like from the side is a straight line from your heels, up your legs over your back to the crown of your head. It'll take some practicing to get the position right. Most importantly, your hands should be directly below your shoulders with fingers facing forward and your elbows straight. Holding this pose strengthens muscles around your core.
  • Side plank: Form a straight line again from feet to head, but with only one hand supporting you and your body, which is facing the side instead of the ground. Your free hand can be laid across your hip, or for even more of a challenge, extend it towards the ceiling. The side plank is more difficult, but worth it because it targets your side abdominals, which are also important for core strength.

Targeting Abs

The most common women's ab exercises are different types of crunches and sit-ups. Don't forget to incorporate exercises into your routine where your legs are required to come up off the floor; for many women, this is easier and also effective. In addition, varying your routine over the days of the week prevents boredom and develops more muscle groups than simply sticking with same routine.

You can use these as a great starting point for developing those female abs you've always wanted. Don't forget that many Pilates and Yoga exercises are excellent for your abdominals, so if you've been doing crunches every day for a month and need something new, check out some Pilates or Yoga exercises, take a class, or buy yourself a DVD for home practice.

Fat Reduction

Of course, in order to see those fabulous female abs you've developed with the help of the exercises above, you'll need to make sure to take off a layer of fat if you've got some to spare around your middle. The only way to lose fat is to do cardio workouts and take in fewer calories per day than you burn.

Of course, even if you can't get to the point where those fabulous female abs are visible, your body will be healthier and stronger once you've developed abdominal muscles, whether you can see them or not. So even if losing enough fat to actually see those abs is out of the question, ab exercises are still highly beneficial.
