The Anatomy of a Breast

Your breasts are not composed of muscle, but a combination of fat,milk-producing glands, ligaments and connective tissue. Since the breasts are not a muscle, they can't be exercised. Thus, the concept of firm breast exercises is a fallacy. Plastic surgery is the only thing that will really help, but that can be costly and in some cases, dangerous. That said, before you decide to go under the surgeon's knife, keep in mind that a well-designed chest and back exercise program can enhance the appearance of the breasts while improving both static and dynamic postural alignment. Since posture and alignment have a direct effect on the forces of gravity that cause breast sag, these exercises might be able to keep breasts from sagging any further.

Understanding the Causes of Breast Sag

Breast sag is as inevitable as death and taxes. Small-chested women are the only ones that seem to be immune. As mentioned, your breasts are composed of ligaments and connective tissue. As you get older, the forces of gravity pull on the ligaments, which in turn cause the breasts to sag. Since many people spend their days hunched over a computer, the resulting hunched forward posture hastens the forces of gravity and often causes a premature sagging of the breasts.

Breast involution can also cause breasts to sag. When the milk-producing system inside your breasts is no longer needed, it begins to shrink. If you don't breast feed, it will happen after pregnancy. However, even if you have never been pregnant, breast involution will occur during menopause. Although the tissue inside the breast is shrinking, the skin that surrounds it is not. This causes the sagging appearance.

Posture and Firm Breast Exercises

Exercises that improve posture are the best firm breast exercises. Working the muscles of the upper back is the best way to counteract the breast-sagging effects of a consistent, forward-flexed alignment. These three exercises are helpful:

  • Lat Pulldown:The lats are the muscles that run down the side of your back. Strengthening them helps keep your posture upright, which can slow down the sagging process.
  • Pullover: The pullover uplifts your entire upper torso. It's a perfect antidote the the breast sagging forces of gravity.
  • Seated Row: Although women spend a good deal of time trying to develop the cleavage of their chest, developing the cleavage in the upper back creates a sexy, well-balanced appearance.

Chest Exercises

By exercising the muscles that surround your breasts, you can create the appearance of firmness. These include:

Of course, you can also perform body weight chest exercises such as the push-up. Most of the exercises shown can either be performed on a cable machine or with weights. However, if you do not have access to either of these, or if you would prefer a home workout, you can use resistance bands. Remember, standing tall and displaying your body with pride and confidence is the key to making your breasts look firmer and your entire body look healthier.
