Free Weights Workout Program
From LoveToKnow Exercise
A good free weights workout program is beneficial when incorporated with a comprehensive cardio routine. Free weights can also be much more versatile for home gyms than weight machines.
Free Weights
As the name indicates, free weights are weights that aren't attached to a machine or another mechanism. Dumbbells, bench press, and other weights that can be lifted and carried around are all examples of free weights.
Why are free weights beneficial? Beyond being much more portable than weight machines – and oftentimes less expensive, too – free weights can provide toning and strength-building quickly. The reason is that the weights must be stabilized by the person instead of by machines. This forces the person to work even harder when lifting and going through a free weights workout program. It is the necessity for stabilization that makes free weights so effective.
Home or Gym
You don't need to join a gym or fitness center in order to go through a free weights workout program. Plenty of exercises usually performed on weight machines can be modified to be done using free weights.
While gyms and fitness centers usually offer a wide variety of free weights for patrons to use, you can get a few pieces that easily store at home and provide similar benefits. Since free weights aren't attached to machines they can be brought out during your workout time and then put away when you are done.
Create a Free Weights Workout Program
The program you choose can complement other strengthening exercises you do or can be the bulk of your weight work. Just be sure to choose a program that offers the benefits you're looking for. For example, if you simply need to tone and lose weight, then you will want to use high repetitions with low weights. If your goal is to bulk up, you will want to increase the weight.
You can choose between a full body weights program or break your routine into a few programs scattered throughout your week. You might work on a routine designed to strengthen your arms one day and then a different routine to strengthen your abdominals a couple of days later. The key is to ease into your routine and be consistent. Avoiding injuries is important if you want to have a successful free weights workout program.
Personal Trainers
Personal trainers can create free weight programs targeted specifically for your needs. Although it usually costs money to work with a personal trainer, the cost may be worth it if you don't have any previous experience with free weights. You don't have to retain the services of a personal trainer for very long; once you get the routine down you should be able to do it on your own.
Create Your Own
With so many instructional DVDs, websites and books available there is no reason why you shouldn't be able to create your own workout program with free weights. Do some research and design a program that works with your ability level and desired outcome. Here is a brief list of resources:
- Websites: There is no shortage of websites offering tools to help you design your own free weights program. Sites like Gyminee and Truly Huge offer free guides for beginning weight programs utilizing free weights. You can also find programs on websites for gyms and for fitness magazines.
- Instructional DVDs: DVDs are great because you can view demonstrations for effective free weight programs and there are many different DVDs to choose from based on your needs. Lift Weights to Lose Double Weight is an example of an introductory DVD and The Essence of Dumbbell Training spotlights specific weights for use in workout programs.
- Books: Plenty of books have been published regarding free weights workouts. 101 Ways to Work Out With Weights and The Great Dumbbell Handbook are great introductions to free weight workouts.
