Jump Rope Workout
From LoveToKnow Exercise
When it comes to choosing an exercise regime, it's easy to overlook the jump rope workout as an option. In reality, it's an excellent aerobic exercise that helps you to tone muscle and strengthen your core.
Jump Rope as a Fitness Tool
If your thoughts of jump roping go back to the elementary school playground, it's time to reintroduce this fitness tool back into your life. It not only helps to burn calories efficiently in a short amout of time, but while you're at it, you'll be sculpting your:
- shoulders
- chest
- arms
- legs
Basic Jump Rope Workout
Jumping rope isn't difficult once you get your form down. These reminders in proper form will help you make the most of your jump rope workout:
- Feet lift off the floor only 1 - 2 inches when jumping rope, and only the balls of your feet should come into contact with the floor. This allows enough space for the rope to slide under your feet and keeps the exercise low-impact.
- Elbows should be kept close to your sides using your wrists and forearms to turn the rope. (Not your shoulders).
Jumping rope is a great workout, and you may be surprised that you tire before you complete your workout. If this happens, toss the rope to the side, and continue the motion with your arms and legs. As your fitness level increases, you'll be able to work up to using your rope for the entire workout.
Proper Fit
One thing people tend to overlook when purchasing a jump rope is fit. To determine whether or not a rope fits you, put your foot in the center of it and lift the handles. If they reach past your armpits, the rope is too long for you. Here is the rule of thumb you can use as a guide:
| Person's Height | Suggested Length |
| Up to 4’-10” | 7 foot rope |
| 4’-10” to 5’-5” | 8 foot rope |
| 5’6” to 6’ 9" | 9 foot rope |
| Over 6’ | 10 foot |

Hi D, You should avoid jumping rope on extremely hard surfaces like concrete or tile because it's too hard and could cause an injury. However, wood floors are okay. Jump rope on a carpeted surface or use a floor mat such as a thin exercise or yoga mat. Wear shoes that give support when you jump rope. Athletic shoes such as tennis, cross-trainers or basketball shoes are appropriate. Do not wear running shoes because they were not designed to support all of the bouncing you will be doing during a jump rope workout.
