Lower Ab Exercises
From LoveToKnow Exercise
Lower ab exercises are an important aspect of any complete exercise regime. Not only are these exercises great for keeping your abdominal muscles strong in order to stave off future back problems, but the aesthetic appeal of tight lower abs is undeniable.
Abdominal Strengthening
It isn't only the upper abdominal muscles that need attention. Lower ab exercises target muscles below the bellybutton. People who have excess weight, and women who have been through pregnancies, may find that this area of the body is one of the trickiest sections to get fit and to maintain. Luckily there are many lower ab exercises to choose from, making it easier for people to switch up their routine periodically in an effort to continually challenge the lower abdominal muscles.
Exercises for Lower Abdominal Muscles
Although there are a wide variety of exercises available for people looking to tone and strengthen their lower abs, many people prefer to find a few specific exercises and gradually increase the repetitions and intensity in order to further condition the lower abs.
Here is a brief list of some of the most popular exercises and equipment used to tone and strengthen lower abdominal muscles:
Simple Exercises
Some of the best lower ab exercises don't involve any equipment at all and can be done just about anywhere.
- Leg Thrusts: Lying on your back, lift both legs at the same time in one motion until they are as vertical as you can manage. Squeeze your abdominal muscles to reach the highest point possible without lifting your back off the ground while keeping your hands tucked under your backside.
- Pelvic Tilt: While on your back, bring your knees up to a comfortable position while keeping your feet on the ground. Lift up the bottom part of your torso for a count of five, and then slowly and gradually return to the resting position. This should be a fluid movement and is not supposed to be terribly strenuous.
- Biking: Assume a position as though you were going to do sit-ups, but put your legs in the air. Bend one knee and bring the opposite elbow up, and then alternate. This exercise targets the lower abs as well as the oblique muscles.
Exercises Using Equipment
Plenty of manufacturers have created equipment to accompany lower ab exercises, but not all of them work equally well.
- Sit up boards can be used for a variety of exercises including those designed specifically for lower abs.
- Exercise balls are often utilized as part of a lower ab routine.
- Exercise machines made specifically for abdominal work will include many different options for lower ab exercises.
The great thing about exercises for the lower abs is that they can usually be done quite efficiently and effectively without any equipment at all, although many people claim that certain equipment can speed up toning exponentially.
Lower Ab Exercises for Back Problems
Many people with chronic back problems have these issues as a result of loose abdominal muscles. When the body's core is not tight and strong, it sets the stage for injuries and other issues. Some personal trainers recommend that people with back problems concentrate on strengthening their body's core with lower ab exercises in conjunction with other exercises designed to make the entire body stronger and less prone to injury.
The thing to keep in mind is that some back injuries are made worse with certain exercises. You don't want to further strain your back during your attempt to make it stronger. It is a good idea to speak to a personal trainer or physical therapist to find out what lower ab exercises are appropriate for you with regards to your back problems. Don't just jump into a lower ab routine that you find in a magazine or online, if you have existing back problems, because there is a chance that you can make your injuries worse instead of better.
