From LoveToKnow Exercise

The Malibu Pilates Chair

People are often leery of buying another piece of useless home exercise equipment. Not that they intend for it to be useless, but the reality of in-home use of exercise gadgets tends more often to function as a clothes horse than as an inspiration and tool for getting in shape. The Malibu Pilates Chair hopes to be more and offers a "one-of-a-kind" recipe for successful weight loss and toning with its adaptable spring-resistance and easy-to-do cardio exercises. It promises to sculpt:

  • legs
  • arms
  • buns
  • thighs
  • tone abs with every move

Pros and Cons

Let's look at the pros and cons of the Malibu Pilates Chair a bit closer to determine whether or not it really is the answer to help achieve that slimmer, sexier body:

Pros

  • Chair Construction
    • Sturdy
    • Safe
    • Lightweight and easy to store
  • Easy to Use
    • Custom-split-step pedals work arms and legs individually or together
    • Easily adjusted without stopping to maintain calorie burning
    • Comes with a DVD which includes a10 minute introduction to the Malibu Pilates workout followed by the 20-minute makeover segment for days when you feel squeezed for time, and also features a 45-minute workout that includes total-body sculpting Pilates exercises intermingled with cardio workouts.
    • Additional DVD featuring Pilates instructor Mari Winsor in which she has created a 30 minute Malibu Pilates Chair workout
    • Promises quick weight loss in pounds and inches
  • Comes with a Healthy Eating Guide
  • 30 day money-back guarantee

Cons

  • Price – this may or may not be a con depending on whether or not you actually use the chair. The current average rate is around $350 with a stated value of $400 at their website, though they do offer a risk free $14.95 trial offer (plus shipping and handling).
  • Exaggerated claims—success stories highlighted on the site state, "Results are not typical. Your results will vary." That about covers it—it raises the question of what is typical.

Will It Work for You?

The real question that comes into play is, "Will the Malbu Pilates Chair deliver the results you want?" Exercise and a healthy diet will contribute to weight loss. How much you lose and how fast will depend on what you eat, how many calories you burn and how faithful you stay to your plan. The Malibu Pilates Chair can aid in promoting a healthy lifestyle that includes exercise if used regularly. There it is. If you use it, it should be beneficial. It's not a magic tool. You can accomplish weight loss with or without it. Ask yourself if you would rather put the $350-$400 toward hiring a personal trainer which costs about $120 for three sessions. Whether or not Malibu Pilates will work for you depends quite a bit on you. Are you dedicated to losing weight and living healthy, or are you prone to add it to your healthy collection of exercise gadgets gathering dust in the garage or serving as a clothes horse in your bedroom? If you find yourself in the first category, chances are it will work for you.

Hi Sharon, Thank you for sharing your experience with the Malibu pilates chair. It sounds like a good idea to use your own music. Have you considered listening to an audio book instead of music every once in a while? If you are familiar enough with the DVD exercises, you can go through your pilates routine listening to an audio book. Thank you for reading our article.

I have been using the chair for about one month and I love it. I am feeling better. The only thing that concerns me slightly is getting bored with the dvds. I just started doing the wall chart today but adding more reps. I did this to my own music and thought it was good for a change. Anyone else need to vary their routine? I would be interested to know what you are doing. I do think this is a great form of exercise for everyone but as with all exercise you need to keep at it and also combine with healthy eating.

Hi Regina, I suggest checking with the manufacturer, Guthy-Renker, to get replacement springs. Ebay also sometimes has Malibu pilates chair springs for sale.

Thank you for your comment.
