Naked Pilates

Naked Pilates is another style of exercise that utilizes the Pilates Method developed by Joseph Pilates in the early part of the 20th century. Pilates uses the concept of mental and physical harmony are required for health. Initially designed for rehabilitating injured soldiers, modern Pilates is popular for maintaining a sleek physique.

Naked Pilates Focuses on the Details

Naked Pilates is performed in the nude. The reason and support for naked Pilates is the detail oriented movements that comprise Pilates' exercises. A person in loose clothing can still perform Pilates, but there is no absolute guarantee that the lines of their body are matching the form they are attempting. When the body is nude, cheating is not an option.

Tucking in the tummy for example or engaging the buttocks are emphasized when a person performs their Pilates exercises in the nude. Many exercise studios do not offer a naked Pilates class and in all fairness, many who exercise would likely not attend a nude exercise class of any kind.

Exercising in Privacy

Naked Pilates are more likely to be performed in the privacy of an individual’s own home. Recommendations for those interested in this method of exercise includes taking a couple of standard Pilates' classes to become familiar with the motions and movements. Pilates focuses on firm, controlled movements that emphasize coordinated motion in the muscles.

Pilates' crunches, for example, target specific short and long motions that engage the abdominals. There should be no flopping or surging motions, but rather controlled, smooth motion that brings the upper body and knees towards each other, but not necessarily together.

Comfort Factor

When performing Pilates or any exercise in the nude, comfort should be taken into account. Carpet burns are a factor, so be sure to use an exercise mat to reduce discomfort and potential injury. Also note that higher impact Pilates can be distinctly uncomfortable if the testicles or breasts are not supported.

Exercising in the nude can be safe with proper procedures and care. All equipment (mats, etc) should be cleaned regularly to minimize germs. Towels may also be used to maintain a healthy clean surface.

Pilates Principals

The principles of nude Pilates are the same as standard Pilates. The fusion between mind and body is emphasized. Practice should lead to the body moving through the exercises without concentration. Each movement should be performed correctly and naked Pilates emphasizes that detail. Deep breathing remains a focus of concentration to reduce the tension, oxygenate the muscles and to engage your mind in the exercise.

Control and precision are other principles that are emphasized in naked Pilates. Each exercise and movement performed while doing Pilates is done for a purpose. Each one leads to another and requires precision to be performed correctly and to maximize the benefits of exercise. As with any form of exercise, those interested in Pilates (clothed or otherwise) should consult a physician if they have any questions about personal health and safety while performing the form of exercise.

As nude exercises are more likely to be performed in the privacy of an individual’s home, any Pilates DVD can serve for instruction. There are some DVDs available that focus specifically on nude Pilates exercises including Pilates Secrets - Basic Mat Workout. Be advised that the men leading the exercises are all nude.
