Pilates Machine
From LoveToKnow Exercise
Looking for a Pilates machine? It may seem odd that a machine exists for Pilates; after all, it looks a lot like yoga, right? While Pilates is hardly yoga with equipment, it does not require a great deal of fancy equipment to achieve your goals whether at home or at the gym.
Reformer: The Pilates Machine
When discussing a Pilates machine, what people are actually talking about is the Pilates reformer. This is a really archaic ‘looking’ device that provides Pilates enthusiasts with some custom resistance, alignment and flexibility, all of which are ideal for a good Pilates workout.
You may have seen the Reformer at your local gym in one of the Pilates workout rooms or maybe tucked away in the corner of the yoga gym. You may have wondered what they were for and while they are moderately expensive, these Pilates machines are worth the investment to some people.
Pilates Machine: Resistance Training
Resistance training is behind the design of the Reformer. The equipment uses springs, ropes and sliding bars to help you achieve your correct Pilates form. The structure of the machine helps you to perform your moves easier and with the precision necessary to maximize your success. This Pilates machine, however, is not designed for the Pilates amateur.
Novices are advised to not invest in a Reformer or other Pilates machine. Instead, you should continue to attend your local studio or gym and take classes under the tutelage of a certified instructor.
Style of Reformer
There are different styles of Reformers available. Some are made from metal and some are made from wood. Some styles sit on the floor, other styles sit up on legs and feature ropes or leather straps. There are compactable Reformers that are designed to fold down and slide under a bed. Ultimately, Reformers are designed specifically for Pilates exercise and help you maintain your core focus and mind/body fusion.
Where to Buy a Pilates Reformer
You can purchase a Pilates machine at most places that sell exercise equipment. Before purchasing a Pilates machine of any kind, be sure to visit local sporting goods and exercise equipment stores in order to check them out. This is not the type of equipment to invest in without checking it out first.
Be sure when you examine the equipment that you check the safety features, how easily it may be cleaned and whether any of the components (resistance bands, etc) can be replaced if necessary. The equipment should be sturdy and built to withstand weight and force. Don’t buy anything that you cannot test first and be sure that you can return it if necessary.
If you’re not ready to invest in a Pilates reformer, don’t be upset. You can still perform your Pilates at home with a home kit that provides you with a mat, resistance bands, ball and instructional video.
