Types of Aerobic Exercise

From LoveToKnow Exercise

What are the most popular types of aerobic exercise? The most popular types vary, depending on what type of exercise one prefers doing.

Swimming Laps

Many people prefer aerobic exercise that doesn't require any thinking at all; for example, many people like to get all of their aerobic exercise by running and jogging because it can be so relaxing. On the other end of the spectrum are exercisers who find running to be terribly boring and therefore only run for five minutes before stopping. For these exercisers, an aerobics class, where the routine is always changing and the beat of the music is unpredictable, is ideal.

The beauty of aerobic exercise is that there are so many types to choose from that everyone can choose the cardio workout that they enjoy the most.

Aerobic Exercise

Aerobic exercise, otherwise known as cardio exercise, is any type of exercise which uses large muscle groups all at once. It's because so many muscles are recruited to work at the same time, at a highly demanding level, that the heart has to work extra hard in order to provide your muscles with enough oxygen for them to properly function. Aerobic exercise is any exercise which increases your heart rate for a sustained period of time. Through this elevated, sustained heart rate, your heart becomes stronger and is better able to function even when you are not doing cardio exercise.

Different Types of Aerobic Exercise

Whether you enjoy working out at the gym, joining a class, or exercising on the weekend with friends, there are plenty of aerobic exercises no matter which type of exerciser you are.

Classes

The first thing that one might think of in terms of classes that provide cardio exercise is an aerobics class. In addition to signing up for a class, the following programs all offer options for group workouts, with music, that produce excellent cardio benefits.

  • Cardio spinning: A killer biking workout, complete with music—guaranteed to burn tons of calories; additionally, because the bikes are fully adjustable, beginners and advanced spinners can all join the same class…there are no complicated class schedules, making the number of offered courses per week much higher.
  • Step Aerobics: A twist on the traditional aerobics class, adds another dimension while keeping the high-energy music.
  • Dance: Some forms of dance (e.g. hip-hop) offer cardio benefits and can be lots of fun, too.

Gym Machines

  • Elliptical or Treadmill Machine: Working out on the elliptical or the treadmill both provide cardio workouts, depending on the speed at which you exercise. A rule of thumb is that your breath should be harder to catch; you shouldn't be breathing so hard that you feel like you might pass out, but it should be difficult to hold a 'normal' conversation. If you are breathing easily enough to have a 'normal' conversation, you need to increase your intensity level in order to get a good cardio workout.
  • Exercise Bikes: A popular alternative for those not looking to join a spinning class, a different type of stationary bike is usually available in the same area as the treadmills and ellipticals.

Individual & Team Cardio Workouts

  • Swimming: Laps are a great form of exercise; perhaps the best aspect of swimming as aerobic exercise is that it is so easy on the joints. Swimming has very little impact on them, making it an ideal form of exercise for those who do not want to strain their knees and other joints, or for those recovering from an injury and not wanting to forego working out during their recovery.
  • Jumping Rope: Excellent aerobic workout, very minimal equipment required, and can be done indoors in the winter.
  • Running: Running is one of the best cardio workouts; however, pay attention to the surface on which you run. If you run often, and it's always on pavement, you could sustain significant damage to your knees.
  • Jogging: Jogging is a popular option for those who find running to be too difficult or who are looking to build up to running being their aerobic exercise of choice.
  • Basketball and Soccer: Full-court basketball, as well as soccer, are both excellent types of aerobic exercise because of all the running involved.
