A Good Start

Plenty of people have started exercise regimens by simply walking around the block after dinner. It then evolves into longer walks and soon these folks find themselves walking for exercise on a regular basis, deriving all the benefits of a steady walking routine without the potential risks of vigorous, high impact exercises that may do more harm than good in someone who is not in peak physical condition.

If you are interested in walking for exercise, starting a walking routine isn't difficult. Most fitness experts state that walking is the ideal way to ease back into exercise or to begin exercising, if you have never intentionally exercised before at all. To start walking for exercise, simply go outside and take a walk. The next day you should aim to walk a little further, and as you increase your distance you can eventually work toward more strenuous walking. If walking outside doesn't appeal to you, try walking on a treadmill.

Equipment

Walking doesn't take a lot of equipment. When you initially begin walking for exercise it is sufficient to simply put on a pair of comfortable shoes and go for a walk outside. Once you decide to get more serious about your walking regime, there are things you might want to add to your list of things to buy:

  • Pedometer: A pedometer is designed to tell you how many steps you take while walking. A high-quality pedometer will also tell you how many miles your steps translate into. Some pedometers also estimate the number of calories your walking burns.
  • Walking shoes: Although you can go for a walk in just about any type of shoes – or even barefoot – if you want to get serious about walking as a form of exercise then you will need to purchase high quality shoes that are appropriate for walking. The shoes don't have to be terribly expensive, but you will find that the higher quality the shoes are the easier your walks will be on your feet and the rest of your body.
  • Walking clothes: A leisurely stroll doesn't necessarily call for athletic clothing, but if you want to get serious about walking, then you will want to get clothing that is conducive to exercise. Clothes designed for walking are comfortable and allows for airflow so you aren't drenched in sweat by the time your walk is over.
  • Music player: Whether you choose an MP3 player or a small portable radio, you may find that walking is a lot more fun when you do it while listening to your favorite music. Make sure you follow local laws with regards to wearing music devices while walking; some places – like military installations – do not allow pedestrians to wear headphones.
  • Walking/jogging stroller: Why not bring your kids along on your walks and show them how much fun it can be to exercise while enjoying the outdoors? Be sure to test drive plenty of different walking strollers before making your purchase because pushing a difficult stroller can ruin walks quickly.

You don't really need these items in order to successfully walk for exercise, but if you want to walk frequently then these items can certainly make the experience more comfortable and fun.
