Ways to Workout at Home

From LoveToKnow Exercise

If you don't have a gym membership or the motivation to go for a run, there are plenty of affordable ways to workout at home.

Working out at home

A gym membership can cost a pretty penny. Of course, it is also possible to spend tons of money buying heavy workout equipment and essentially turning your basement into a gym. However, this is unnecessary. You can work out at home, even if you don't have exercise equipment. All it takes is a little creativity. In addition, there are a variety of inexpensive equipment that can provide an excellent workout without taking up a lot of space.

Many Ways to Workout at Home

Whether you want to get a cardio workout, strengthen your muscles, or relax with yoga, there are plenty of home workout options. For the best results, alternate the type of activity you do in each workout. One day should be dedicated to strength training and another day dedicated to cardio exercise.

Aerobics and Exercise

Workouts in your living room most often include workout videos and music for aerobics, yoga, or pilates. By purchasing a few DVDs of different types, you can vary your workouts so that you don't get bored. Another great option is to get workout videos through a subscription service, such as Netflix. This way you can use the video for as long as desired and then trade it in for another workout video. This is perhaps the best option for those who get bored with exercise routines quickly.

Strength Training

Two of the most popular ways to strength train in the comfort of your own home are with resistance bands or with a collection of cheap dumbbells. You'll have to get more creative with this equipment than with a strength trainer at the gym. However, the good news is that working out with resistance bands or dumbbells is often a lot less boring than using the weights at the gym. Crank up your favorite workout music and try some of these excellent dumbbell exercises. You'll notice the results in no time!

Cardio Options

Jumping rope is by far the least equipment-intensive form of a home workout. Invest in a good jump rope, of the correct length for your height and you will have an excellent cardio workout that can fit any schedule. You can get an intense workout in a short period of time with a jump rope. Not only are the cardio benefits extremely good, but you will also experience refined definition in your legs. For an added arm benefit, invest in a weighted jump rope, which strengthens your arms and back as you swing it.

Of course, when most people consider doing a cardio workout at home, they first think of some sort of cardio machine. Treadmills are common home workout equipment, as well as elliptical machines and stationary bikes. Rowing machines are also a good option because they provide a cardio workout as well as strengthening and toning your arms.

Benefits of Working Out at Home

The benefits of working out at home are many. Most popular among these benefits are:

  • Reduced cost
  • Not dependent on the weather
  • Privacy
  • No travel to the gym necessary

Regardless of which reasons are most important to you, there are many benefits to choosing a home workout. If you take a spinning class at the gym, and you're running a few minutes late, you'll either miss the warm up, or you won't be admitted to the class at all. Put a spinning bike in your basement and nobody will be the wiser if you arrive on time or 10 minutes later.

Of course, working out at home can result in loss of motivation for some. You may have the intention of doing that yoga video when you get home tonight. However, when you walk in the door and kick off your shoes, eating ice cream in front of the TV might be more appealing.

Experiment with the many ways to workout at home and see if any of them work for you and keep you motivated. After all, that is what it's all about. You want to enjoy exercising so that you'll be motivated to do it regularly.
